Sherman Oaks is a suburb of Los Angeles, located in the San Fernando Valley.
The hillside area of Sherman Oaks is tucked into the lush, north-facing slopes of the Santa Monica Mountains, giving this portion of the neighborhood a low population density compared to the rest of L.A. County.
Driving down from the hills to the valley floor, you’ll reach the main drag along palm tree-lined Ventura Boulevard which passes east/west through the community. The 101 (Ventura Freeway) runs parallel to the commercial core until it intersects the 405 (Santa Monica) Freeway, which abuts the eastern edge. Suffice it to say, residents of both neighborhood areas enjoy easy freeway access!
Yes, celebrities live here. Beautiful homes, excellent views, privacy, and proximity to television and motion picture studios (CBS Television City, Warner Brothers, and Universal) makes Sherman Oaks a convenient place for entertainers to live.
Pricier luxury homes in Sherman Oaks are nestled in the wooded hillsides. Here you will find houses styled in Modern, Ranch, Mediterranean, and Spanish designs. A small number of Bungalows and Tudor-style homes also grace the area.
If you’re looking for Condominiums and single-story homes, most are found near Ventura Boulevard and from there, north to nearby Van Nuys.
The annual Sherman Oaks Street Fair is the biggest event in the San Fernando Valley with attendance of over 100k people. The fair is held each fall (cooler daytime temperatures this time of year, of course) and includes a pet zone, food trucks, classic car and hot rod show, carnival and fun zone, and entertainment on two stages.
Residents love quick shopping trips to Sherman Oaks Galleria (also home to Arclight Cinemas) as well as supporting the many locally-owned restaurants and retail shops up and down Ventura Boulevard. Westfield Fashion Square is the largest mall (229 stores) in Sherman Oaks and considered the best spot to shop for popular brands (Apple, Gap, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, etc.)
One of the great jewels of L.A. is the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) system, which has 72 locations, making it the largest publicly funded library in the United States. The Martin Pollard Branch serves the Sherman Oaks neighborhood.
With the borders of Sherman Oaks, there are a few open spaces, some operated by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. While dog-friendly hiking and city views are possible, your best bet to enjoy nature is to roll a little further down the road to nearby Sepulveda Basin Recreation Center, Franklin Canyons Park or Coldwater Canyon Park.
The beloved Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Recreation Center offers a multitude of amenities like sports fields and courts for baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and football. By design, the rec center is family-friendly, offering a children’s play area and picnic tables. Plus, the center’s programming includes day camps and classes like martial arts, gymnastics, guitar, piano along with arts & crafts. The Van Nuys / Sherman Oaks Aquatic center, located on the same grounds, offers programs for springboard diving, synchronized swimming, Special Olympic swim team, and water polo.
